MOUTHPIECE Blog: Iowa Broadcaster Loses Job Over Internet Photos

  • Toronto Homes for Sale · 3 months ago
That last paragraph probably reads like I think it’s OK for blogs to get people fired, so long as they apologize. That’s not what I mean. I also don’t mean to downplay Iowa’s hand in the firing too; they could just as easily have suspended Podolak and given him a crash course in how not to end up drunk on the Internet

Some good points raised in that post. Will be back to check for more.

Cook is right. If you’re going to cost a guy his job by posting essentially innocent, but potentially damaging, photos of the man on the Internet, the least you can do is apologize when guy eventually gets fired.

I think the media needs to give a break to fellow newscasters. They're all colleagues one way or the other and should be looking out for each other rather than tearing them down like this. I feel disgusted.

Just felt like pointing out that the Wiz, like Podolak, is also a University of Iowa alum. Just sayin'.
  • TP1980 · 11 months ago
If you think the Wiz is responsible for Podolak no longer working Iowa radio broadcasts, you clearly don't know all the facts. He, by accounts in the Iowa old-fashioned media, was given the chance to get alcohol treatment and keep his job. He, reportedly, chose to retire instead.

The Wiz simply republished what was already out there on Iowa-based Web sites. Not doing your homework and making such charges is childish, and cowardly.
  • Eamonn · 11 months ago
First of all, you're right: Podolak had the chance to keep his job, according to the Gazette, but as he didn't want to deal with a suspension or reprimand, decided to leave instead. We'll add that to the post in a second, and thank you for bringing it to my attention, as I hadn't seen it when I wrote the post yesterday afternoon.

That said, The Wiz of Odds brought the photos to a larger audience, message boards or not, and I fail to see how that decision didn't lead, in one way or another, to Podolak eventually losing his job. It did, whether he made the final decision, or the administration did. And one more time, because it bears repeating: There is a precedent for posting stuff like this and I'm not wholly opposed to it -- I just found the Wiz's lack of condolences in his follow-up post to be really cold and off-putting. If you're going to start a firestorm, deal with the repercussions.

This blog is pure trash. Podolak is a chronic alcoholic and has a history of embarassing behaviors. You're just a ballsack-licker trying to curry favor with the secon-tier sportsmedia hacks.
  • wat · 11 months ago
So to paraphrase your post: The two parties who bear responsibility for Podolak's firing are (i) the mean meanie blogger that posted the photos and then didn't say he was sowwy; and (ii) the university brass who decided a 62 year-old high-profile employee of the university shouldn't be piss-druink and peering down the shirts of 19 year-old chicks in public.

Even without the background info supplied by the two Iowa commenters above me, what of the dumbass drunk guy who knows damn well what he does for a living and exactly what kind of humorless, souless folk his bosses are? Sweet Christ, people have camera phones, and if you're a remotely public figure any and all photos of you engaged in any kind of randy activity WILL SHOW UP ON THE INTERNET. When are old people required to commit this fact to memory?

I'd apportion the responsibility here as follows:

    (i) Podolak -- 100%.
  • Eamonn · 11 months ago
I suppose it was left unsaid, because I didn't think it needed to be said, but duh. Ed Podolak shouldn't be so drunk he can't see people taking photos of himself peering down women's shirts. Clear? Clear.

And yet again, I'll repeat it: There is an argument to be made for posting the photos. There is also an argument to be made for not posting them, I guess, but if faced with similar circumstances, we might have posted them. It's just the lack of responsibility taken in the Wiz's second post that irks more than anything.

And finally, I'm not sure why we can't blame Iowa's adminstrators for being, as you say, humorless and soulless. They get a pass on that? They're allowed to fire (or, apparently, suspend) a guy for doing a completely harmless thing -- drinking in public and flirting with apparently consenting women while doing so -- without being called out for being soulless? That doesn't seem fair.

I'd apportion the responsibility here as follows:

    (i) Podolak: 40%
    (ii) Soulless Iowa types: 40%
    (iii) Us Internet cretins: 20%

The internet will eventually cost everyone their respective jobs. So much for drinking and flirting with girls. If you do that and pictures are taken, chances are you'll be fired eventually for it. F*ck blogs and their posting of photos where people are drunk. "OMG, (insert name here) DRANK AND LOOKED AT A GIRL IN PUBLIC...WHAT AN ALCOHOLIC...HE NEEDS HELP!" Sports blogs that do this need to get over themselves.

Nicely done, it's a sorry deal. Done out of jelousy. The ISU losers are still pissed about Larry Eustachy getting caught for being drunk and partying with coeds, you'd have to drink to coach at ISU.... or just leave. Ed is on the radio for christ sakes, not like he's the pope. I can't believe it's a story, except read my above statements. But when your schools team never gets into bowl game, year after year, one becomes hostile... it's sad, they need help, not the "alcoholic" Ed made some mistakes, sure, none of you would have said anything had it been an alter boy and a preist...

I'd like to know what an Iowa State fan is doing at a bowl game, let alone a New Year's Day bowl game.

I think he was a little casual in uploading his lewd photos. I couldn't find another dumb guy like that. He deserves the sacking as it reflects badly on the company he's representing.

Hmmm... the University or the blond, the University or the blond.... I'd retire and take the blond to. ;)

How come anybody post such photos on sites.

It's unfortunate how things can evolve with the internet these days. This poor guy, who was just having fun, loses everything just so someone else can get a few extra views on their website.

As a public person, you need to be more careful over your personal conduct.
  • rap · 3 months ago
Yes I agree with you. Personal conduct is important this is some people see the points of a person.

The guy had fun on his time off. I don't care what his job is. If he's on his own time and he isn't hurting anyone, then he shouldn't lose his job. Well, if he was a pastor at the local church I could see it. But just because he's a well-known figure doesn't mean he can't have fun.

Misuse of internet for such kind of photos is not good at all. Such person should be given strict punishment for sure.

Those people are pissed. Now Podolak is dunzo. It’s officially being called a retirement, but it’s pretty obvious the man was canned.
  • Finger oxygen monitor · 2 months ago
So a guy went out had a few drinks, relaxed, and had a good time. Nothing illegal why fire him? The bigger issue is the blogger, destroying a man's career. The act is unethical and inappropriate. If people cannot be allowed to enjoy themselves without fear of public scorn, we will become a world of drones.

That's one of the beauties of the internet (not). While the internet brings us unlimited possibilities and benefits, there's also the downside of everything being able to be seen by anyone and everyone. Poor dude.

That someone like myself — who isn’t as good as the top-ranked eaters — can do this this is going to send everyone into a frenzy. And it’s going to be great for the sport in general.
