Thegazzelle you must be kidding!! There is no way this kid will be able to create his own shot with the athleticism of the NBA. The Pacers don't need good old boys, they need guys who can shoot over seven footers who have long arms and can jump (see Dwight Howard). What position is Hansborough going to play? To small for power forward, not fast enough to play small forward, no real jumpshot for two guard, and definitely not center. Wasted pick period (see Kevin Love).

Oh, yeah, right...it couldn't be that the entire PC nation can't bear to acknowledge the overwhelming number of straight-from-the-hood bangers go from the street to the court (or criminal court), and after the game to roll heavy with more armament than a Hungarian Freedom Fighter - - all so that they can continue their street shit at the nearest strip joint, VIP chamber, or whatever. We're all tired of all you all chicken shits afraid to say the king has no clothes on. How many shootings, rapes, dog fights, drive-by's, and jail terms, and flashing the gang signs before we just say the game has "gone to the dogs"? Who needs the crap and who needs the hood? It's just cheapened the game and ruined the moral tone it once had. And you have to call Bird a racist for acknowledging that it is what it is. Care to debate this one a bit with a few stat's?

Danny Granger ("BLACK") is my current favorite player and hopefully soon to be our Olympic rep... With Jermaine O'Neal ("BLACK") being my all-time favorite Pacer... And it has to be known that the greatest Pacer of all time, Reggie Miller ("BLACK") is beloved by every single Pacer fan...

I love flashy basketball... I try to do it as much as possible myself... I wear a headband, a sleeve, wristbands, and plastic wrist bands every time I step on the court...

Chris "Birdman" Anderson was the poster boy this year for the “Thuggets”... he played flashy with terrible footwork in one-on-one defense and barely a modicum of fundamental rebounding technique, he wore a headband around a crazy haircut while sporting an overabundance of tattoos, and he acted like a thug on the court.

His team got beat by the Los Angeles Lakers, with players like Kobe, Lamar, Ariza, Bynum, Derek Fisher, & Shannon Brown play what you call "white" basketball.

horrible post. just horrible, racism breeds racism. if you look hard enough racism is everywhere, no need to add to that by scrutinizing every teams draft choices. we are talking about a guy (t. hansboro) who was the 2008 College player of the year. 13 wasnt exactly high in the draft, in a "historically weak draft" 13 is pretty awful isnt it? stop creating racism and anger with "perceived" notions like this one. Bird was a very successful player in the NBA without demonstrating any sort of explosive athletic ability. The guy wasn't going to win any high school track meets in the sprint or the high jump.

So I'll concede that Bird MAY value that sort of athletic ability in players less than some others and place more relative emphasis on a guy's passing, shooting, and basketball IQ. That would make sense, considering the kind of player Bird was.

But I think the racist interpretation is unwarranted. Roy Hibbert fell to the Pacers last year, and the general consensus was that he wasn't "athletic" enough to warrant a higher pick. But the Pacers like him because he's a "hard worker." This fits in with the Hoosier concept of what makes good basketball that you talked about, and Hibbert shows that concept is independent of race, at least for the Pacers front office. So I'm not sure why we're dragging the "race" angle in here.

And I would further question whether the general consensus on the Hansbrough's future success in the NBA isn't based a little bit on his skin color. The guy was National Player of the Year, and one of the best players in the history of college basketball. Few think his game translate to the pros, and a lot of that is based on his perceived lack of athletic ability. In a workout with the Nets, however, his combine numbers weren't too different from Blake Griffin or Jordan Hill (http://www.netsdaily.com/bl.... In fact, Hansbrough's performance was very comparable to Hill's.

Honestly, I don't have high expectations for Hansbrough in the NBA either. But I'll be frank - it's because he's white. It's not like there's a lot of American white dudes in the league who are considered anything but role players. In fact, I can't think of one. And it's probably a little bit racist of me to judge Hansbrough on that, or at least it's prejudiced. Because I am prejudging him on his skin tone.

So my point rounds into this: is it really Bird or the Indiana market that's a little bit racist here, or is it the rest of us?

That was a horrible and mildy racist comment, hoops. To peg an entire race as irresponsible is far more general than this article could ever be. So many black athletes are like former pacers. To say that all black athletes act the same is akin to saying all white guys play the same. Or, that Larry Bird, a white guy in a white state, values the play of those on Hoosiers in a time where that doesn't win.
